So, You've Been Asked to Be the Best Man
Either your best friend, or one of your best buddies is getting married, and has asked you to stand up and have the honor of being the best man. Figuring out what to do, what your job duties are, how you have to dress, and all of the other details can be a bit confusing, but being the best man is not as difficult as you may think. Your main job is to make sure that the groom is where he needs to be, when he needs to be there, and that he as relaxed as possible.
As the best man they'll be several duties before the wedding, including helping the groom choose his wedding attire, being at the rehearsal dinner, handling the ring, and some of the fees for the wedding, and making sure that all of the other groomsmen know what their job is, and that their going to be able to do the job well and look as good as possible.
It may also be your job to organize the bachelor party. This can be a fun evening out at a local establishment, or private party in a home. It's all up to you and the groom as well is possibly the other groomsmen as to how elaborate bachelor party you throw. The biggest idea with a bachelor party is for a chance for guys to enjoy themselves and have male bonding moments.
The biggest thing to remember if you've been asked to be the best man is its your job to help your friend comes through his wedding experience with as few nervous moments as possible and some great memories.
In small wedding you'll have simple duties, and in larger weddings, you can actually be a major player. But remember, your main job is to hold the hand of the ground as he steps up to make a major change in his life. Grooms can get nervous, forgetful, and often times can be a nerve-racking miss. It's your job as the best man to be there to hold his hand, assure him that all has been taken care of, make sure his tie is straight, and that he's as relaxed as possible during his big moment.
Don't forget some of your duties may include sending your groomsmen off on his honeymoon. You may be asked to hold tickets, help him pack, arrange for luggage and transportation or a variety of other duties to make sure that the new wedding couple get off to their honeymoon the right way. Usually this type of duty will be done with the maid of honor, so the two of you can consort together to send them off in style.
However you look at it, being the best man is holding the wedding party together, making sure your groom is where he supposed to be when he supposed to be, and holding his hand so that he can enjoy the festivities with a friend by his side.
